A3 Artist Live/Work

Fall, 2009  |  Urban Studio  |  Boston, MA

The Fort Point District of Boston, Massachusetts is a community currently being re-developed and re-thought.  Dominated by old warehouses and abandoned buildings, the district is also home to a community of artists.  A3 is an adaptive re-use project aimed at providing affordable artist live/work studios and small family dwellings.  A3 preserves the industrial atmosphere of the area and provides tenants with a new "standard" of affordable housing through careful detailing of raw materials.  Open-air and protected work spaces carve out the main form and organization of the complex.

The complex also utilizes many sustainable features.  Cisterns for water collection are exposed and act as sculptural figures to the public.  A ventilated wall on the residential tower serves as a passive cooling feature, as well as a visually colorful canvas.
